Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
It is
past the registration deadline…can I still get my child on a team?
A:
You can
send in the registration form, fee, late payment and fundraising
fee. However, there are roster limits and if there is no room on
any team in your child’s age division, your child cannot be placed
on a team. In this case, your money will be refunded.
Q:
Is WYSA
a part of the Watertown Park and Rec?
A:
No, the
Watertown Youth Soccer association is a separate organization. WYSA
is run primarily by parent volunteers. The city of Watertown,
however, does maintain the fields, parking lot, and takes care of
all utilities during the soccer seasons.
Q:
When
can my child start playing soccer in the association?
A:
Your
child must be 5 years old by July 31st of the fall season
in order to be able to play WYSA soccer. They do NOT, however, need
to be enrolled in Kindergarten.
Q:
How do
I know what division my child will play in?
A:
We have
8 basic divisions, U6, U7, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19. Each
division has girls and boys teams. The division your child would be
in is determined by the age the child is as of July 31st
of the current year for the fall season. The same date is used for
the spring season. The teams remain the same from the fall to the
spring season.
Q:
What do
I have to do if I want my child to play in a different age division?
A:
Occasionally there are children who want to “play up” or “play down”
an age division. Players/parents desiring to do this must request
permission in writing from the WYSA Board of Directors. The
requests will be reviewed and granted or denied based on individual
circumstances. Players who are allowed to “play down” a division
will not, however, be able to play in tournaments if their team so
happens to enter one, due to age.
Q:
How are
the teams selected?
A:
It is
the intent of WYSA to make all teams within each age and gender
division as balanced as possible.
To improve this process, we will be implementing a draft to select
teams beginning with the new season that starts in the Fall of
2005. Once we know the number of teams in each division, we will
recruit that many coaches. Once the coaches are recruited, they
will select their teams via a draft. We will develop a system for
rating the players to help the coaches in drafting balanced teams.
Placement of new
players on a team for the spring season will be made on a space
available basis. New teams will be created only if sufficient new
players have registered to play.
Q:
What if
no one volunteers to coach my child’s team?
A:
We hope
that utilizing a draft to select teams will make it easier to find
enough volunteer coaches. Every effort will be made to recruit
enough coaches so that the team size is appropriate for the age
group. If it is not possible to find enough coaches, we will end up
with too many players on each team. That is why it is essential
that enough parents volunteer to coach.
Q:
Who
gets paid in WYSA?
A:
The
Registrar/Executive Director gets paid for the numerous hours that
are put into all that is required of them. Most of these funds are
received from the generous donations WYSA receives from the United
Way. Referees are paid. The referee assignor is paid a minimal fee
for scheduling the referees for each game.
Q:
Where
do the fundraising and concessions money go?
A:
Currently, all fundraising and concession profits are used to pay
for the field/Complex development. There are loans being paid for
the building and once those are paid in full, the money will be
directed towards other things such as bleachers, benches, lights,
wheelchair paths around the fields, steps over the berm, eating and
picnic area, small playground area, etc.
Q:
How can
I get involved?
A:
There are
numerous areas that parents can get involved with WYSA, beginning
with your child’s team: coach, assistant coach, or team parent. For
the association…WYSA is ALWAYS in need of helpers in the concession
stand, equipment and building maintenance, fundraising, etc. And,
to learn the game and make a few extra bucks ($$$), become a
REFEREE! The Referees always have the best “seats” in the house (on
the field). |
